I’m sitting in the car right now (actually it was yesterday) jotting down random thoughts, trying to think how in the world I can explain in a coherent way what has been going on in my heart the past few weeks. It all started Thursday. Well actually…I think it started about seventeen days before Thursday. The seventeen days prior to Thursday, Griffin reached the time frame when we found out about Cora’s cancer, started our stay in the hospital, began the battle for our daughter’s life, prayed more fervently than we ever had before, and said goodbye to our eleven month and three days old baby girl.

Thursday, Griffin reached that eleven month and three days milestone. Not a typical milestone, but one that is definitive for us. The past few weeks my heart has been heavy. And in many ways I’ve felt stuck in a “sorrow slump”. I remember grieving as Levi reached this eleven month and three days milestone…but it was different. With Levi I was grieving my oldest not being the oldest anymore. I was grieving the “what should have been”. All of a sudden Levi started hitting the milestones that we never got to experience with Cora.

Reaching this milestone for the second time has been different. The past few weeks I have been reliving the pain of finding out my baby girl had cancer and having to say goodbye when I should have been watching her as a growing eleven month old just like Griffin. I’ve had to force myself to not dwell on how horrible it would be to lose Griffin right now…just like when we lost Cora. I’ve found myself wanting to hold him close. I don’t know if it is because Griffin looks so much like his sissy…and even acts like her sometimes too? The reminders are much more real and I have felt like the past few weeks I’ve been reliving those seventeen days in the hospital with my baby girl…feeling the pain rush in all over again. I probably could go on analyzing how I am feeling and why, but the reality is that it is just grief…it is what it is.

Thursday, as Griffin reached the eleven month and three days milestone, Joel and I also left on a little ten year anniversary getaway. Good planning on our part…I know. It was the first time we have left Griffin overnight and the first time we have been away from the boys for that long (three nights). I was having a really hard time leaving them. An emotional wreck? Ummm…yes. It is probably a good thing that Joel ended up getting delayed at work and the boys left before he got home and we had to leave. I reluctantly said goodbye to my boys and ran back into the house and had a good, long cry. Sometimes you just need to have a good cry.

It is times like this along my grief journey, as I feel myself wanting to stay stuck in my sorrow, that I have to remind myself again of who my Jesus is.

Who is my Jesus?

I know that He is the answer to my deepest needs, but sometimes I just need another reminder.

I recently heard an arrangement of Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners by Ginger Millerman at a women’s conference. (And just as a side note, her new Hymns CD is so good!) The words have been playing over and over in my head ever since. Not a coinsidence, I know. But words that my loving Heavenly Father knew that I needed to be reminded of during those seventeen days.

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!

Jesus! Lover of my soul;

Friends may fail me, foes assail me,

He, my Savior, makes me whole.

. . . . .

Jesus! what a Strength in weakness!

Let me hide myself in Him.

Tempted tried, and sometimes failing,Β

He, my Strength, my victory wins.

. . . . .

Jesus! what a Help in sorrow!

While the billows over me roll,

Even when my heart is breaking,

He, my Comfort, helps my soul.

. . . . .

Jesus! I do now adore Him,

More than all in Him I find.

He hath granted me forgiveness,

I am His and He is mine.

Β  . . . . .

Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Hallelujah! What a Friend!

Saving, helping, keeping, loving,

He is with me to the end.

The third verse is what really stuck out to me as I’ve felt weighted by sorrow the past few weeks. Who is my Jesus? He is my Help…even when the billows are rolling over me…even when my heart is breaking. Who is my Jesus? My Comfort, the One who helps my soul. I love the end of the first verse too.Β He, my Savior, makes me whole. A mama who has a hole in her heart, needs a Savior who can make her whole. And the reality is that we all need a Savior who can make us whole.Β Who is my Jesus? My Savior, the One who makes me whole.

So we went on our little anniversary trip to Dallas. It was hard to leave the boys but it was such a refreshing trip. One that Joel and I needed in a bad way. We talked for hours uninterrupted, ate lots of yummy food (also uninterrupted), slept in, shopped, and just hung out together. And I am not going to lie…sleeping through the night for three nights in a row was AWESOME!! I’m so thankful that we went even though it was hard. I’m thankful for a husband who understands my messes of emotions. I’m thankful for the two little boys that I got to come home to last night. And I am thankful that they both have passed that eleven month and three day milestone. Their lives are a gift…and each day that I get to spend as their mama is a gift as well.

Even today as I finished up these thoughts I jotted down on our drive and continued to sort through all the emotions that come with having a “hole” from losing your child, I just kept hearing those words…

He, my Savior, makes me whole.

Whatever holes you are facing in you life this week, I pray that you can rest in the wholeness of a relationship with our loving Savior. That is something to rejoice in today! And if you don’t have a relationship with this Savior I am talking about, I pray that the Lord would impress upon your heart the wholeness that can be found in Him alone. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

  • Danielle H. - Ah, man! You were in my neck of the woods! Unless there’s a Dallas in Kansas, too! I am always surprised when people tell me they came to Dallas on vaca. I guess I take for granted how cool the city is! Hope you had fun & you picked a great weekend as far as the weather was concerned! I pray for the healing of your heart.ReplyCancel

  • Jeri - Thanks for your post. You always have the most comforting words. I haven’t lost a child but I have lost the child I thought I was going to have. See my daugther has down syndrome and it was a total shock and something I wasn’t prepared for. I went through a grieving period and on some level am still going through one. I don’t cry everyday now but something will happen and I end up having to go through all of the emotions again. My daugther is 6 and you would think I would be over it but I’m not. I was rather close with God before my daugther was born and then I got mad at Him and pulled away. I am trying to find my way back to Him. I still have angry issues towards Him and just lack of understanding but I guess that would be were faith comes in. Thanks for always saying just the right thing to touch me. May peace fill your soul.ReplyCancel

  • Erin C - I am an avid reader of your blog, but I have never left a comment. You are an inspiration to many with the trials you have overcome. I too lost a daughter. She was 12 hours old when she passed away. I now have an 8 month old son, and he is the light of my life. But I understand all too well about the feelings of not getting to experience events with your daughter that you watch your sons do. It is painful and unfair. But I also know that if we trust and believe in the Lord we will all be reunited one day. Thank you for sharing your beliefs and lessons learned with so many. Funny that you posted about going on a trip away from your boys with just your husband and how you were sad to leave the kids. My hubby and I are going on vacation soon without my little one and I’m having a hard time leaving him for the first time. But I’m glad to see that you actually had a good time and thought it was worth it. I know the same will happen for us…it’s just saying goodbye that’s hard! πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

  • Jane - I just love your blog. I truly do. I love the sweet photos of your children and all your wonderful insight on the love we receive as His children. “Friend” is such an easy word to throw around, but to know that WE are the FRIEND to HIM! I’ve can’t pretend to feel what you have felt or experienced, but I will continue to pray for your family. You are truly an example of His love. πŸ™‚

And I’m sorry if this comes across as creepy!! I promise I won’t show up in your kitchen and boil a bunny a la Fatal Attraction….wait, you may be too young to even remember that movie!! Now I am going to go and cry because I am so old. πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

** GIVEAWAY CLOSED **

I am feeling like one very lucky girl. I now have TWO canvas prints of my sweet boys.

When Easy Canvas Prints contacted me about reviewing one of their canvas prints I was so excited to pick out another print…it is so hard to pick just one. Now I want to print all my pictures on canvas! πŸ™‚

I love this picture because I think it is such a good representation of my kids. When I first saw it I couldn’t help but notice the empty spot on the right next to Griffin. It is where my Cora belongs. I know on the outside we look like a family of two boys. But what You don’t see is that I am a mama of three…one kiddo is just represented by the huge empty spot she left behind. I love that this picture represents that so perfectly. Thank you, Megan.

I paid a little extra and upgraded from an 11×14″ canvas to a 12×18″ canvas so that I wouldn’t lose any of my photo…or that precious empty space. My canvas is a .75″ standard wrap. When I was looking up the links for this post IΒ  noticed that you can now print your favorite Instagram photo on a canvas at Easy Canvas Prints. They even have an option where you can upload your photo directly from your Instagram account. Fun! I might have to try that next.

Here are my two canvases side by side. The Easy Canvas Prints canvas definitely has more of a texture to it than the Canvas Press canvas which gives it a little bit of a different look. They both have good image quality though, so I guess it just depends on your preference! Do you want to win a canvas too? Easy Canvas Prints is giving away one 11×14 1.5″ canvas print to one of my readers! Here is how you can enter to win…

Giveaway Details:

1 Β 11×14 1.5″ canvas print

ONE winner chosen at random

One entry per person

Giveaway ends Monday, August 27th at 9pm (CST)

To enter visit Easy Canvas Prints…come back and leave a comment on this post telling me about one of your favorite photos…or really you can tell me anything you want! πŸ™‚

That’s it! So easy. Be sure to like Easy Canvas Prints on Facebook to be informed of more contests and giveaways.

Griffin :: 11 months

Sheesh. Your dad keeps telling me {with a big smile on his face} what a big boy you are turning into. I keep telling him {with tears in my eyes} that I wish you would stop growing so fast. When I take your next monthly picture you will be one!

It was almost impossible to get you to lay down next to your eleven month flash card but we {barely} did it!

I guess you are too big to be lying down too. You would much rather be sitting up or crawling around.

This about sums up why you won’t cooperate for your monthly pictures anymore. I guess that is one good reason that you are almost one!

Griffin,

You are a precious little boy and as much as I hate how fast time is going by, I love seeing your little personality starting to really shine through. You are sweet and snugly but you definitely know what you want. No more baby food…you won’t touch it. You want what we are eating and if you aren’t getting what you want you let us know. You also are my first baby who will actually spit food at me that you don’t like…I mean like spit it right back in my face. Your favorites right now are bananas, peaches, spaghetti, goldfish and graham crackers. And you definitely have a sweet tooth. You love popsicles and ice cream. You are even drinking out of your sippy cup all by yourself now.

You are done with the belly crawl and are now crawling all over the house on your knees. You love crawling around outside but the tops of your feet and knees are getting raw from crawling on the sidewalk. You don’t seem to mind at all though. You are a tough boy already. I usually can count on you throwing a big fit when it is time to go inside. You can stand while holding onto something but have only pulled yourself completely up twice. You haven’t tried taking a step yet. You clap, wave, and show us how big you are. You still aren’t really saying any words. Just “Mmmm” when you eat and it sounds like you are saying “hi” when you wave. So maybe “hi” is your first word?? Otherwise you just grunt a lot.

You love playing with your brother…although he isn’t loving it as much now that you are getting into all his things. You love tractors and drive them back and forth on the floors. Your brother can make you laugh really hard but usually you are laughing at something naughty he is doing. I’m sure that will only get worse. πŸ™‚

You are so wiggly now and always seem to want down. Except when you are tired or shy. You are cuddly when you are tired and I love that. Before bed at night is our little time together (besides that time we spend together in the middle of the night!). You always want your paci and blanket to sleep. You take great naps now, but ever since we got back from Colorado your nights have been messed up again. Someday we will figure out your nights. That one month or so of sleeping was glorious while it lasted!

Oh, and your hair is getting a little long. Daddy says it is time for a haircut, but you seem too little to have a haircut already. But now looking at these pictures I’m thinking it might be time. Your first haircut before your first birthday…maybe??

I am determined to soak up every minute of this last month before you turn one. I am so thankful for my “two boys” as Levi always says. Love you so much, little one!

Mama

And I can relate to the trucks; my 3 year old is all too excited to “play trucks” with his little brother.ReplyCancel

I am reliving the challenges of a 2-year-old through new, older “rose-colored” glasses. He is my little pal and such a joy. I enjoy your blog and seeing those cute boys doing everyday stuff. Your Levi looks like a pro at farming already. Little Griffin surely has the sweetest face.ReplyCancel

    [Reply]

  • Sarah W - OH my heavens. I can’t believe he’ll be 1 next month.
You tell the sweet boy to cut it out.
All these sweet babies that think they are allowed to go and grow up in the blink of an eye. not cool.
I love your letters to your kids, they inspired me to write a few words to Colby every month. I thank you for that!

And his hair. Oh how I love his hair. I’d struggle with cutting it before his first birthday, for some reason it just seems so sad.

colby is having some weirdo nights too after we thought he had finally gotten the sleeping through the night thing down. I’m blaming teeth cutting currently and hoping we return to normal soon.

    He is SO cute!!ReplyCancel

    [Reply]

  • Tiffany - He is precious! My boys are basically the same age as yours. And time if flying for me too! But it is so fun to watch them develop little personalities! Enjoy 1 more month with your little baby. πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

    [Reply]

It was a typical day of sitting outside in the afternoon andΒ Levi controlling how much snack his brother could have sharing a snack.

Griffin doesn’t seem to mind that his brother thinks he is in charge of everything he does. He is just glad to be fed.

Joel was harvesting and pretty soon the combine started picking corn in the field around our house. Griffin was waving away. He waves at anything and anyone now.

Levi, however, got on the phone and called his daddy. He was trying to figure out how he could get in on the harvesting. Just watching and waving wasn’t going to work for him.

Pretty soon Levi’s uncle drove up in the grain cart to pick him up. He’s a pretty lucky boy to be able to pick up the phone and the next thing he knows a tractor is picking him up in his backyard.

Levi was so happy. He loves everything about farming. And he has loved spending time with his Uncle James this summer.

They waved goodbye and drove off.

Poor Griffin always gets left behind. Someday you will get to ride too, buddy.

We stayed outside and watched the action from a distance.

Corn harvest was so early this year…they started the last week in July. Usually they aren’t combining corn until the beginning of September. Crazy. It is going to be an unusually quiet fall around here.

Levi called his dad almost everyday of harvest to see if I could bring him out to the field. Joel usually drives truck during harvest…Levi loves riding in the truck too. His favorite truck is the blue one…yes, he even has a favorite semi truck. πŸ™‚

He takes everything about the farm so seriously.

I’m so thankful that Levi’s daddy doesn’t mind having a little tag a long.

Corn harvest 2012…done.

The last picture of Levi and Daddy – well, do they look alike or what? Little Griffin is just as cute. I like the wave. I guess that is one good thing about the hot weather….an early harvest. Here in Utah I think some of the farmer’s are cutting their 4th crop of alfalfa since it has been so warm. I know my grass won’t stop growing and it feels like I mow it every 5 days. Fun stuff to see your boys outside enjoying the harvest.ReplyCancel

We miss his daddy so much, especially during harvest times. And we miss being on the farm too! So glad that you get to be happy and to share this for both your boys, what wonderful memories. Love that they are so amped about farming. And it’s awesome to see the ripe corn – we grew some in our garden last year, but we picked too early. Nice to see that the plants actually dry out before you pick… hahaha… we are so ignorant.

There are two precious little girls who need our prayers today. They are both fighting neuroblastoma. I can’t tell you how much I hate neuroblastoma. I would love it if you would read their stories and join me in praying for these sweet girls and their families:

Clara

HenleyΒ

Henley’s extended family has started a fundraiser to help ease the burden of the enormous medical expenses that the family is facing. For all donations of $20 or more, you receive a custom made “Bee-lieve” ornament in honor of the Brave Bee (Henley’s nickname). You can follow Henley’s journey here and make a donation here. Annie (a cousin of Henley’s mom) sent me two Bee-lieve ornaments to give away to my readers. Leave a comment in today’s post and you will be entered to win. I will randomly select two winners on Sunday.

I know there are so many children who need our prayers. I get emails about them all the time and each one is precious. It is hard for me to know how to post about them here on the blog…I’ve been trying to think of a great idea because I can’t tell you how much we appreciated the many, many people who were praying for Cora!! If you have any ideas let me know.

  • trisha - I hate it too! We also personally know 2 girls fighting it. Ugh!!!!

    Hugs,
    Trisha

ps- My kids spent the week at a soccer camp for kids with cancer. They raised $1,442.75 in only 4 days by doing bake sales, sending emails to everyone they knew and going door to door in our neighborhood. ALL of the money goes to our local childrens hospitals (our son was at the same hospitals for his heart defect) to fund research to end this ugly disease. It’s a very tough fight but my family is in it with you πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

  • Cari Chastain - I wonder if you could do posts twice a month, like on the 1st and 15th is something. Post about the kids who you have heard about or any updates you have received. Or one really big once a month post with links and updates. This is such a huge undertaking…all the info. But I do know prayer changes lives. It has been such a huge blessing to us. And it’s free to pass along!ReplyCancel

  • Mary Eidson - I was thinking that maybe you could add a page to the top of your blog with the names and maybe pictures of the children in need of prayer along with a link to their blog.
