Hey Levi, can you show Mama how big you are?
How big is Levi?
Sooooo BIG!
How big is Levi?
{Mom, please don’t bother me. I’m playing with a stick}
Sooooo BIG!
{Okay, if you’ll cheer for me I’ll do it again}
Yeah, Levi!
These pictures perfectly capture you at ten months. You are so big. Twenty three pounds and seven ounces to be exact. I am building some serious muscles by carrying you around, but I love all those baby rolls of yours.
You are active to say the least. You are crawling, pulling up, walking behind things, and even have stood by yourself for almost a minute! You are entertained for usually a few minutes and then are onto something else. You crawl all over the house and have even managed to crawl up a few stairs. Nothing is safe within your reach.
You know lots of tricks. You clap, give high fives, wave, and show us how big you are. You like to perform and you really like when people clap and cheer for you. You like to make people laugh too. I think your personality is going to be a lot like your dads. That is a good thing…he is a lot of fun!
Eating and sleeping are two of your best skills. You sleep about twelve hours at night. You still take two naps, but your morning nap is getting shorter and shorter. You definitely know how to put food away. You are still eating mostly baby food, but some table food too. You really will eat anything we put in front of you. It makes you pretty mad if I am eating something and won’t give you a bite. You haven’t quite figured out how to drink out of a sippy cup, but we are working on that.
You say “dada”, “mama”, and “bye-bye”. Usually you are saying “dada” over and over again all day. You love your dad. You still get so excited when he gets home. You know the sound of the back door opening and race to see him. You get a huge smile on your face when you hear him call your name.
You LOVE to be outside. I think you would stay out there all day if I would let you. You crawl all around the yard exploring and trying to sneak things into your mouth. You love picking up dirt, leaves, and sticks. You already know how to get dirty…you are all boy.
I can’t believe you are ten months already Levi. You are getting so big.

Cora {October 2008}
Levi {October 2010}
We didn’t really do anything for Halloween this year. The weekend was so busy with Judgement House still going on…which was amazing! No trick-or-treating for this little man. But, I thought it would be fun to see if he fit into Cora’s cow costume. I pulled it out this morning and Levi and I went outside to take a few pictures.
Levi was a little lot busier than his sister was when she
was wearing the cow costume two years ago.
He had a hard time paying attention to his mama
because he was looking at cars…
and showing off all his tricks…
and looking for things to put in his mouth…
and crying because I dug all those things out of his mouth…
but when I started jumping up and down and singing,
I managed to get a little smile out of my cuddly cow.

I have days when I beat myself up for not recording more of our memories with Cora. Not the big things like statistics and milestones, but the little details…the funny stories, the daily routines, the everyday. As I cried about all the things that I had already forgotten, a sweet friend recently encouraged me to write down memories as they come to mind. So that is what I have been trying to do.
Cora’s first Christmas was busy with lots of celebrations and lots of traveling. It seemed like a little “much” at the time, but looking back I am so thankful that all of our family got to spend time with Cora, some even for the first and only time.
We celebrated Christmas on New Years Day with my family. My parents got Cora a Chicco activity table. It had a piano on one side and then you could flip it over and it was a lego table. The only picture I got of her was when she opened it with her daddy. She LOVED it. I am pretty sure it was her favorite toy.
I remember Cora was feeling yucky that day. Which is the reason we have so few pictures. She wasn’t too interested in smiling for the camera. She pretty much only wanted to sit on my lap.
But, this is what I really want to remember…
That afternoon when we went home Cora and I went into the house and Joel started unloading all of our gifts. Joel brought Cora’s new activity table into the house and you should have seen her face. Her eyes got so big and she let out this loud shriek. It was like she was saying, “Wow, I actually get to bring that toy home!” It was so cute and we laughed and laughed at her.
Every morning after she would eat breakfast, she would go straight for the piano. She loved standing up and pushing all the buttons. She would carefully walk around the piano to the coffee table and then back to the piano again. She loved the music and the noises. She would rock back and forth to the music. I was envisioning a future pianist.
When we checked into the hospital our families asked if they could bring any toys for Cora to keep her busy while we waited for surgery. We had them bring her piano and once again she thought it was so great. My heart aches looking at this picture. I long to spend just a few more minutes with that happy little girl who seemed to have no idea how sick she was. And I wonder what was going on in my head as I sat there with Cora. I remember being so tired and fighting back tears all day, but trying to be strong at the same time. I had no idea how my life would soon be changed forever.
It was hard to pull that little piano out again, but we had a feeling it might be a favorite of Levi’s as well. He is almost the exact same age right now as Cora was when she first opened this toy.
We were right. He loves it too. Just like his sister. But instead of delicately walking all around it and rocking back and forth to the music, he has found a whole new purpose for the piano. Levi pushes this thing all over the house often dragging lots of toys along with him. Instead of making music it is often crashing into walls as he maneuvers around the house.
I love that Cora and Levi have the same favorite toy.
I love that they both love it for different reasons,
showing their unique personalities.
And as there are so many little details about Cora’s life that I can’t remember,
I am thankful for these sweet reminders.

I deleted some of the original e-mails that were sent to me about making a hat for Levi. Oops! If you are still wanting to make Levi a hat, knowing that some will be donated, please send me another e-mail. Thanks to those of you who have already contacted me. I am thinking that I might need to have Levi try on all the hats for you before we take them to the oncologist!

    God brought a verse to mind to share with you. John 14:26–“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and REMIND YOU of everything I have said to you.”

    One of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to REMIND us of things we once knew. I might be taking this verse slightly out of context, but I think it’s okay. And I’m going to pray that the Holy Spirit reminds you of things you’ve forgotten about Cora. That images and thoughts will just pop into your head and you’ll have the chance to write them down to cherish forever.

    I love reading what you write about Cora. I didn’t know about your blog until after she had gone home to be with Jesus, so for me, she’s always been a sweet memory, but I love the way you remember her and share her life with us in these ways.
    Cora’s life is going to be a constant reminder to me that our times are in God’s hand – every.single.day is marked and He knows them altogether. And that we don’t know what that time is, so we must be thankful and joyous in the NOW and not put those off until tomorrow.

So, I was completely overwhelmed by the number of people who left comments and e-mailed me offering to make Levi a hat. You all are too sweet. But I wasn’t sure what to do because my little man probably doesn’t need 20 hats this winter. Seriously, I had over twenty offers…crazy! And I had no idea how to pick one, which is why if you e-mailed me I haven’t responded…I have been putting it off because I didn’t know what to do.
I thought about just telling everyone that I can’t take any of the hats…that I was just going to buy one.  But, I hated the idea of telling you all no when you are just trying to love on my Levi. So, I came up with an idea. If you left a comment or sent an e-mail, I would love for you to send Levi a hat. We will keep a few for him to wear this winter and the rest we will donate to the Pediatric Oncologist that Cora received her treatments from. Since Levi doesn’t need a new hat everyday, I would love to pass on your kindness and bless another little boy who is facing the horrible reality of cancer. And it is something Levi and I can do in honor of his sister.
If you would still like to send Levi a hat, knowing that most of the hats will be donated, please e-mail me at contactthemacs@yahoo.com and I will let you know where to send them.
I had fun going through all of your hat links. Thanks for the ideas. There are so many super-cute hats out there. Just for fun, here are just a few of my favorites:

  • Anonymous - What a perfect idea. I can’t knit or crochet, but I hope those that offered will still send a hat!!! How sweet.
    PS I was lead to your blog to pray for your sweet Cora. I keep reading because, man that Levi is just too cute for words. And you are just so kind and genuine. Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to continue to pray for you.ReplyCancel

  • Alicia - That is a really lovely idea! My son had a serious brain infection last year. The infection is long gone but the scars on his head will forever be…a hat made with love can only help some of these little guys who are going through such tough circumstances.
    I so enjoy your blog and your strength is admirable!ReplyCancel

  • Mary - I think that is the best thing you could have ever done!!!!! You are so sweet and always thinking of others. This way many little boys will be blessed with new hats instead of just one little boy (even though I think he deserves all twenty hats lol). I think it would be really great if you could take a picture of each hat on Levi’s head before you give them away. That way all the kind people can see thier hat modeled by a super cute little man before it is donated. Just an idea. I don’t know if it is really possible or not, but it seams nice anyway.ReplyCancel

  • MamaBear - Great Idea. Cora’s oncologist is the same oncologist that Daxter has…so maybe Daxter will get a hat! 🙂
    Thank you for your prayers Jess and such a loving compassionate heart. I continue to pray for you everyday.

  • Anonymous - Today is the day my little girl ( okay 9 year old-maybe not so little) gets her hair cut for locks of love!! She is so excited to get a fresh start and hopefully give that gift to another little girl! I am not sure what to expect as far as length after the cut but she says she is getting it cut like yours! Thank you so much for sharing your life and encouraging an already inspired little girl to do great things.

Live each day knowing all of the Gospel is true.
Live each day determined to be
useful and joyful in Jesus.
Live this day in a way that,
should all things change tomorrow,
you will know that the Lord is your God
and this is the day to be satisfied in Him.
I listened to this quote over and over this weekend as my church presented the story of Hannah’s Hope. Over and over I was reminded of how life changing Jesus is. Over and over I was reminded of the incredible HOPE that can only be found in Him. And over and over I was burdened for those who don’t know true HOPE.
I am praying that these words would be true in my own life. I am praying that today I would be determined to be useful and joyful in Jesus. That today I would be completely satisfied in Him.
What is your prayer for today?
(I would give credit to the writer, but I’m not sure where this quote came from…sorry.)

  • A - My prayer is that I can trust in Jesus to stay close in the depths of the valley of infertility, and trust that God really does have a happy plan for our family….someday…ReplyCancel

  • Rob and Corrie - My prayer:
    “That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.” (Phil.3:10-11)

    I have been praying this since I was a teen, and He answers! I suppose that’s why some of the hardest things I’ve been thro’ have been the most precious, realizing that there is no “resurrection” w/o “death” first!ReplyCancel

  • Allen and Debby Graber - Jess, I hadn’t seen that quote before. Is it something Steve gave all of you? I would love to hear some of the stories. Al has shared some he hears. We need to pass those on to encourage one another. I know especially the registration people don’t hear what is happening – the “end of the story” so to speak for so many going through JH. I copied the quote down. Wonderful!ReplyCancel

  • Sue - Shew, I can’t believe you had so few comments to this post! I found it so motivating. Today, I’m going to pray for all parents who have loved and lost children, especially the little ones who were taken from their families far too early.

    Personally, I pray each day for another day to enjoy my own son. Time is precious and stories like yours are a harsh reminder that time is fleeting.

    Sending lots of wishes to you for happiness.

  • rob - We are leaving tomorrow for a 3 day trip without our 4 small children. I am nervous to leave them though they will be well cared for. I pray that we have a safe and fun trip as husband and wife and that we return home safely and rejuvenated to our precious family.
