We had our first cousin Valentine party last year and it was so fun that Levi and I decided it might need to become a tradition around here. I know not everyone would agree, but I think Valentines Day is great. And now that I am the mama of two boys I have to take advantage of this day because it might be my only chance to plan a party with lots of pink and hearts and get away with it. I don’t think Joel will let me throw any girly, pink birthday parties for the boys. So…Valentines day it is! ๐
They had the mailboxes in the dollar spot at Target again. They were a hit last year and this year they had turquoise mailboxes! Love that. So I went with a turquoise/red/pink theme. Besides the mailboxes, all the other decorations were things I had on hand.ย
I might have to leave the happy heart banner up for awhile. It makes my kitchen so cheery. You can find the tutorial for the happy heart banner here.
Instead of Valentines, I made a cousin memory game for Levi to give to each of his cousins. It was inspired by this one from Jones Design Company. Perfect for a cousin Valentine party! The kids drank red fruit punch from mason jars and red striped paper straws from Garnish.
The vinyl polka dot table cloth was on clearance at Walmart at the end of the summer. I used kraft paper down the middle of the table and cut out water color hearts to spread around the table.
ย There were eight “big” cousins and three new baby cousins this year. The big cousins feasted on homemade macaroni and fruit. Yum. (Did you notice all of Levi’s cousins are drinking red juice but him. He doesn’t like juice…crazy. He couldn’t part with his milk cup. Doesn’t quite go with the theme…but, whatever!)
Before the party, Levi and I made sugar cookies to decorate.
ย Each cousin got to decorate two cookies to eat. Lots of frosting was used.
And lots and lots…
ย and lots of sprinkles.
ย Levi didn’t even bother eating the cookies. Just frosting and sprinkles for him.
And of course a big mess. But it is worth getting sprinkles everywhere when you are having so much fun with your cousins.
The baby cousins just hung out on the couch while all the sugar consumption was going on. There were actually three babies, but somehow we only managed to get a picture of these two. It is hard to believe that next year they will be running all around with the rest of them!
There is lots of cousin love around here. Levi and Griffin are blessed to be able to grow up with so many of their cousins. We will definitely have to have a cousin Valentine party again next year. At least I get to plan a girly party once a year, right?!
Last year’s cousin Valentine party was featured on several blogs this month:
Thanks for the Valentine love ladies! You can see the original post from last year’s party here.
Phew. I’m glad I finally got this posted before the week got away from me. ๐ย
Hope you all have a great weekend!
I tried really hard to get a smiley picture of me and my two little loves.
This was the best we could do.
one very tired mama
(with very sleepy eyes)ย
+
one two year old about to have a major Valentine meltdown
(he had just consumed a large amount of sugar and it was way past nap time)
+
one sweet four month old baby
(who is also the reason his mama is very tired)
We had fun celebrating Valentines Day around here though.
There were hearts everywhere and cousins running around everywhere too!
Heart cookies.
Heart decorations.
And lots of sprinkles.
I’ll tell you all about our cousin party soon…after I recover from the sugar overload and get a little more sleep (if a certain little boy will let me)!
Happy heart day!
I wanted to think of some Valentine decorations that Levi could help me make his year. I came up with a watercolor heart banner that was inspired by these watercolor animal silhouettes. We will definitely have to make the animal silhouettes in the future…a little more boyish. But since it is February, we made heart silhouettes instead and strung them together to make a happy heart banner.
Here is what you need:
watercolors & paintbrush
white paper or cardstock
construction paper (for heart cutouts)
scissors/paper cutter
hole punch
bakers twine or string
tape
Before you call in your busy toddler, cut out the hearts and pennant shapes for the banner. But if your house is like mine, your busy toddler will notice and say, “What doin’ Mama?”. And then he will want to help. ๐
If you need something to do with your leftover heart strips, check out these hanging heart charms. So fun and simple.
Now kiss all the hearts while your mama finishes getting everything ready.
Tape one heart onto each pennant shape. I used painters tape and it worked great. It stuck well enough that the hearts didn’t move while we were painting, but came right off without tearing the paper when we were done.
Now paint away! We had some new paints, so I just took out the reds and pinks so that Levi would only use those colors.
Levi did really well until he decided he actually preferred painting with water and not paint. Lots of water.
And then he decided he needed to taste the water too. Nice red lips, dude.
He made it through three hearts and then he was done. The ones he got too much water on bled through a little and the heart shape wasn’t as defined, but I love that because I know which ones are his! The colors are brighter and the heart is more defined the less water you use. Next time I will just give him some paper when he is done and he can paint with water to his little hearts content. Why didn’t I think of that before??
I finished up the rest of the painting and then we left them on the table to dry.
When they are dry peel off the construction paper hearts and this is how they should look.
Punch holes in the top corners and string the hearts onto the twine. I used a small hole punch and strung the twine through with a crochet needle.
And now you have a happy heart banner…that even your toddler can help you make.
When Levi took his nap I couldn’t help but paint a little more. You know, because I am well rested and have so much free time these days! This time I made a turquoise happy heart banner.
A certain little boy has been going through a very whiny stage lately. Oh man, it is hard to figure out how to teach kids not to whine…at least it is hard for me! We have been talking a lot about having a happy heart, not a whiny heart. That we need to be thankful and cheerful because God has blessed us SO much.
We are working on memorizing this verse while we eat breakfast in the mornings. Sometimes when Levi is in trouble he will repeat to himself, “Have a happy heart, have a happy heart.” It is so sweet. But last week when I asked him if he was having a happy heart he told me that Ishama took it. (Ishama and Bobby are his two imaginary friends…that is a whole other blog post.) Ha, ha. Nice try, Levi. I hope you get your happy heart back soon!
We hung two of the banners in the kitchen for our cousin party next week and took one to the cemetery for Sissy. Now there are happy hearts hanging all around. And every time Levi walks through the kitchen he is reminded to have a happy heart…a good reminder for me too!
Have a happy weekend!
cora’s heaven birthday ย :: ย february 8, 2012
We have always called this day Cora’s heavenly anniversary. But this year it changed. As I talked with Levi about his sissy and what we were going to do on this day he kept asking, “Cora’s birthday?”. I told him that it isn’t Cora’s birthday, it is the day Cora went to be with Jesus. The day Cora went to heaven. But as we talked throughout the week we finally decided it is kind of like Cora’s birthday. It is actually even better than a birthday. It is Cora’s heaven birthday. Levi looked at me and said, “Cora not sad. Cora sooooo happy.” So true baby boy, so true.ย When we all get to heaven what a day of rejoicing that will be!
Yesterday was a very dreary day around here and we were feeling it both inside and out. Joel thought he was getting over the flu but barely made it out the door to go to work yesterday morning and was throwing up again. Talk about making an already hard day even worse. Poor hubby. We were planning to start off Cora’s heaven birthday by eating donuts together. But instead Joel went back to bed and the boys and I went to eat our donuts and pick up some flowers for Cora. The donuts were yummy and Levi had a fabulous time riding in the car cart at the grocery store. (Really, who invented those things? The car cart is Levi’s dream ride but totally impossible for me to push around the store. I was just thankful to make it through the isles without running into someone or something!) We picked out some pretty pink roses for Cora and went home to check on daddy.
After lunch we drove down the road to the cemetery. Joel was sweet and drug himself out of bed to come with us. Levi and I had made a happy heart banner for Cora earlier in the week. I figured he would forget about it, but every time he saw the one we had hung up in our kitchen he would ask about Cora’s happy hearts. So we found some sticks and tied up a happy heart banner in front of her memorial stone. I think that it is the prettiest spot in the whole cemetery right now. This was Griffin’s first trip to the cemetery with us…he slept through the whole thing. The rest of the day we spent at home hanging out and trying to let Joel recover from the flu. My sweet sister and brother-in-law brought us out dinner last night so we didn’t have to cook. So nice.
We went to bed thankful for the Lord’s compassion and grace that brought us through another year without our Cora. Thankful for the eleven months we were blessed to be Cora’s parents. Thankful for Cora’s life that was short but full of purpose. Thankful for Cora’s little brothers who now fill our arms each day. We prayed that Cora’s life would continue to impact others for Jesus and that we would always be faithful to share her story and the Lord’s faithfulness to our family. And that was Cora’s heaven birthday, February 8, 2012.
Thank you so much for your comments, cards, emails, texts and phone calls yesterday. We know that our sweet girl is not forgotten and we appreciate your prayers more than we could ever express. We felt loved and covered in prayer all day. You all are a huge part of this journey through grief with us. Thank you for walking beside us even on these hard days.We love you all!
Just a few things as we get ready to face the week that marks the day we had to say goodbye to our little girl. Not my favorite week for sure. But the Lord has given us just what we have needed to get through the past two heavenly anniversaries and I know He will be faithful to do the same as we approach three years without Cora. But instead of dwelling on that, how about a few random pictures of my two silly boys? I’m pretty sure they will be getting some extra squeezes around here this week.
ย This boy is pure sweetness. I just love the way he smiles at me. And that twinkle in his eye reminds me so much of his sissy. We have been spending a lot of quality time together in the middle of the night. He likes to wake up frequently and check on me. ๐
ย Griffin got to try out the walker last week and he loves it. And all of a sudden his big brother started noticing him. Imagine that? Levi thinks the walker is awesome. Don’t worry, I know that it is not safe for Levi to be standing on it. Griffin is always closely supervised when cruisin’ in his walker.
ย Levi is needing a little extra supervision lately too. This boy is BUSY. I looked over from the couch where I was feeding Griffin and he had sat himself up at the computer and was very busy doing something with my keyboard and mouse. I asked him if he was supposed to be touching Mama’s computer and he said it was his fence for his dinosaurs and cows. Of course, my mistake.ย
And the next time I looked over he was calling his daddy on the “phone” asking him what he was doing on the farm. Oh my. Why is it so hard not to laugh when I should probably be disciplining for not obeying?
Last week the weather was amazing. It was so nice to be able to play outside and we have been going on walks as often as we can. The weather was beautiful again today so we hit the dirt roads and went on a walk this morning too. I am even starting to get back to running a little…maybe I need to schedule a race for the near future…a little motivation! Griffin looks like he hates going on walks, but he actually loves it. We were just about home and he didn’t like that I stopped the stroller. He prefers to be on the move.
This week we are going to do a few Valentines projects, play outside as much as we can, take some flowers to the cemetery as we remember our baby girl’s life, try not to all catch the flu (Joel thinks he is getting it today, yuck), and just do our best to embrace with joy whatever this week holds.
Hope you have a great week too!
