** GIVEAWAY CLOSED **

Thanks for all your sweet comments about my “new look”. I really like it too! I am still learning a lot so I am guessing there will be a few glitches along the way. Please be patient with me! I am hopefully going to work on it some more this weekend and I’ll let you know when the links are up and running. Some of you asked about my design and how the blog migration went. Β I can’t take all the credit…I had lots of talented helpers!Β I will let you know the details of that too. But, since it is Friday…how about a giveaway?!

DaySpring sent me some items from their Redeemed collection. What a fun box to open! Everything is just as gorgeous as it looks online.

This is the Lovely by Design Overnight Bag. So cute. Every girl needs another bag, right?

Β This is a great bag and my favorite part is that it is just as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside. The inside is wipe-clean patchwork pattern fabric with a zipper pocket on one side and two little open pockets on the other.

I think the Truly Treasured Wallet is my favorite. It is so cute and the inside is lined with an adorable yellow floral print (I forgot to take a picture of it, but you can see the inside on the website by clicking on the link). How stylish am I going to look pulling this out of my purse?!

Check out the Redeemed Picnic Basket! Wouldn’t this be such a great wedding gift or housewarming gift…or any gift, really! I think it would be fun to fill it with picnic foods or gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores. Who wouldn’t like a patchwork picnic basket filled with goodies?!

The top of the picnic basket has John 1:16 written on it. A good reminder that we are so very blessed. As soon as this 100 degree Kansas weather goes away, I am going to have to plan a picnic with my boys and our cute picnic basket.

I also got the Pure Sweet Joy birthday cards from the Redeemed collection and the Everything Beautiful Toiletry Bag. I always love DaySpring’s cards…they are the best! The toiletry bag is super cute on the inside, but I have to admit that the outside material is a little too “bright orange” for me. But if you really like orange you might like it anyway! It definitely will be great to take along on our next road trip…if we ever attempt vacationing again! πŸ™‚

Besides the toiletry bag being a little too orange (minor detail…just had to be honest!), I love everything that DaySpring sent me. The Redeemed collection is awesome and I can’t wait to see more of their products. Would you like to win something today? DaySpring is generously giving away 3 Lovely By Design Overnight Bags and 3 Fullness of His Grace Picnic Baskets. Yay! Here is how you can enter to win:

ps- I have been thinking about your vacation post the other day on perspective. I have been so crazy busy lately with my kids sports schedules. It’s been exhausting and I have been just wishing for a few days off to just hang out at home. But your post reminded me of how awful it was after Nate died 4 years ago and we had NOTHING to do but sit home. Back then I would have done anything to have a busy schedule so that I didn’t have to stare at 4 walls all day long. So, I thank you for reminding me to be grateful in every moment and appreciative that God gave me this perspective as a gift through the death of my son.ReplyCancel

It was time for a new look! And actually I needed to make a change because of the comment problem that I was having in Blogger…now I can host giveaways again! So, here it is. A new look for The Macs. You will notice there are several links that don’t work yet. I just had all my posts migrated over to the new blog today, so now I will work on linking and categorizing some of my posts. Hopefully it will make it easier for you to find what you are looking for. And of course if you have any suggestions let me know!

And to celebrate finishing this big blog migration project I will be hosting a DaySpring giveaway on Friday. It is a good one, so make sure you check back in throughout the day tomorrow!

Β We are still sick here. Ugh. Everyone is slowly getting better, but it has been a long week. I even got sick yesterday. Just a cold, so I am thankful for that…but man, it stinks to be sick in the summer!
You wouldn’t want to see any pictures of us this week. We are a wreck. So, here are a few of us planting pumpkins before we went on our “vacation”.Β
Β Pumpkins are my favorite thing to grow in our garden. I love having lots of pumpkins around in the fall. This is the beginnings of our little pumpkin patch.
Β Joel always laughs at me because I get so excited about planting pumpkins and then he usually ends of doing all the work. But, Levi thinks that gardening is his and daddy’s job. And really, who would document our memories if I wasn’t taking the pictures? I promise I’ll water and pull weeds, honey!
Β Griffin wants to be part of the action so badly. Instead he has to be contained in his walker because otherwise his mouth would be full of dirt. Someday, little boy.
Β “Look mom! I have pumpkins on my head.” πŸ™‚
Β Levi watches everything his daddy does so carefully. He doesn’t miss anything.
Β And when he’s not watching his daddy he is helping and trying to be just like him.
And this is what Griffin and I did. Stand in the middle of the garden and watch the boys work. We were so helpful.
Our garden has been quite a huge failure this year. The heat and drought has been so hard on it. Bummer. So I am hoping that my pumpkins make up for the rest of my crop failures. I am quickly learning that gardening may not be my best skill!

  • Meghan - It’s so neat to read these posts about your life “on the farm.” It seems like a whole different world from living in the suburbs of San Diego. I’m pretty envious of having your own pumpkin patch, though! I can’t think of a neater way to spend autumn than walking through your very own patch and using all of your harvest to decorate your home. So fun! And sweet Levi working so hard just like his Dad is too cute for words. On a side note, I listened to the sermon that you mentioned in your recent post and I loved it. Thanks for sharing the link! Your pastor is so sweet. Loved his golf analogy at the beginning. That would have really gotten my hubby’s attention, had he been listening in. πŸ™‚ So much wisdom we can glean from the book of Proverbs. Hope you all get back to feeling better soon!ReplyCancel

  • happy_wife - Really it isn’t possible for your family to be any cuter! I also have two boys and I love, love, love seeing the photos of your family! It is such a sweet, loving innocence in every photo you post. Do you have any professional experience? DO you edit them at all? They look so perfectly take, I am just wondering. πŸ™‚

  • Sarah - It’s been really hot and dry here in Indiana as well. The crops look horrible andante people have started mowing the corn off or plowing it under. Some people aren’t going to have enough corn to feed their livestock so they are selling them. It’s really sad. We are praying for some relief soon. Good luck with your Pumpkins!

  • Auntie EM - We are experiencing the worst heat spell in Salt Lake City Utah. We will remember these days fondly in January!! We are afterall in a high desert plateau so we have to expect heat. It is wonderful to see all the seasons, to watch the earth change, and to be amazed every day in the beauty and wonder of God’s creations. Your boys are getting big and are as cute as ever.ReplyCancel

  • creole wisdom - I’m sorry to hear about the drought… not too surprised thought since it’s been ungodly hot up here in MN, I can only imagine what it’s like in your neck of the woods. Hang in there, fall is coming and I hope your pumpkins will be a bumper crop πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

We’ve been on vacation. Well, I’m not really sure if I would call it a vacation…but that was the plan. We left for Colorado last Sunday and were so excited to get away for a week and escape the Kansas heat. But this year our vacation was definitely a bust. Total bummer. This is how it went down.
After five hours of driving and one hour of little brother screaming the car was finally peaceful. We were beginning to wonder if the long drive was worth it. Maybe we should have just stayed home. But eight hours later we were hanging out with our dear friends and we decided it was totally worth it…screaming and all.
I didn’t take any pictures except on my phone but Laura sent me this sweet picture of our boys. They played hard. The weather was so beautiful in Colorado…trampoline jumping, swinging, running, swimming, talking on the porch, snacking, and s’mores making…all day long. Levi had so much fun. And I think Griffin was really wishing he knew how to walk so he could chase after these boys. I was trying to talk Joel into moving the farm to Colorado. He said it wasn’t possible. Bummer.

(Laura just sent me a few more…proof that I was actually on this trip too!)

We left Colorado Springs on Tuesday afternoon to head up to my grandparents cabin in the mountains.

It was just as I remembered. Beautiful and peaceful. I love going to the cabin with my family and I was so looking forward to spending time there. We spent the evening laying in the hammock and playing tractors in the wood chips. No internet and no phone service. Perfect.
Shortly after we put Levi to bed that night he threw up. Ugh. The rest of the trip pretty much went down hill from there. Just think…lying on the bed watching movies (I have way to many Boz and Veggie Tales songs running through my head right now), high fever, not eating, waking up all night…everything that shouldn’t happen on vacation. My sweet grandma took Griffin on lots of walks to keep him happy. He started running a fever the next day.
There were times when we thought they were getting better and squeezed in a few fun moments. We really needed to get out of the house.
We even decided to go into the national park one day and give it a try. Everyone was feeling a little better. This was the part of the trip I was really looking forward to. Hiking on the trails and picnicking in the mountains. I have such good memories of doing both of those things with Cora and Levi. We drove just a little way into the national park for our picnic and by the time we got there Levi was asleep.

Β Griffin wasn’t too thrilled with the whole picnic idea either.
Levi slept through our picnic and when he woke up this is what we were dealing with. Definitely not a good day to try hiking. Back to the cabin to watch more movies.
The most adventurous we got was hauling pine cones on the deck. We kept thinking maybe Levi was getting better but on Thursday night he was running a really high fever again. He was miserable. We decided it was time to go home. Goodbye hiking. Goodbye cute family picture in the mountains. Goodbye trip to IKEA. Goodbye going back to Colorado Springs to hang out with friends some more. Hello twelve hour car ride with sick kids. And to make things worse, Joel threw up as we were getting ready to leave Friday morning. I was the last one standing.
I won’t bore you with the details, but let’s just say that the trip home was one of the longest days ever. I was feeling sorry for myself. We really needed a break from our everyday and this sickness stuff was really messing up my plans. But as we were leaving Friday morning the news of the Aurora movie theatre shooting was all over the TV and radio. Such heartache. I can’t imagine what so many families and friends were dealing with that morning and for many more days and months to come. And then I remembered a time when Joel and I were driving back from the cabin all alone, in a quiet car right after Cora died. I would have done anything to have a crying little girl in the back seat. It gave me some much needed perspective. I was thankful that I was going home with my family…we were a little sick but we were together. I needed that reminder.
Saturday morning we took Levi into immediate care. It was a little traumatizing but after being checked by the doctor, blood work, and a chest xray they figured out he had pneumonia. What?! How in the world do you get pneumonia in the summer? Crazy.
The rest of our “vacation” looked a lot like this. We realized this weekend that this was the first time since we moved here eight years ago that we were all home all weekend without anything to do (except a trip to the doctor). We don’t have true “weekends” here on the farm. For some reason the cattle think they need to eat two times a day. Sheesh. That really breaks into a girl’s weekend (actually it really breaks into my hubby’s weekend…but I really like to have him around!). I’ve tried to argue with Joel that they could probably miss just one meal, but apparently that’s not the case. So spending the weekend together at home just hanging out was a really nice change…and a good end to our vacation even if it really was a bust this year.

  • Rich and Carolyn Dewey - So sorry it was such a bummer! The night we started out for our 11-month USA trip in 1975, after an hour of driving we had two boys throwing up in the back of the station wagon, on sleeping bags! YUCK!!! Then a couple of hours later it was Rich and another little boy!! I was the only one standing. Was this how our year was going to go??? No, actually after a night’s sleep and a day later everyone was fine. Sure was a heck of a way to begin! Guess it happens to families!

    Hope everyone is better now!!ReplyCancel

  • Chey-Anne Smart - I just had to tell you about our vacation three weeks ago. We haven’t been able to go anywhere in two years. My husband is a landscaper and we can’t leave in the summers because he is so busy. Well, we pack up and drive 6 hrs with our three kids. The one year old is a terrible rider. After we get there, my daughter complains of her stomach hurting the entire trip and the fourth night there, we spent it in the steam in the hotel bathroom with the baby who has croup. We get ready to leave and head back home that morning since we were up anyways and my husband stomach starts hurting and he’s sick with the stomach bug! Then we spend the next two weeks at home with all five of us either having the stomach bug, croup, or sinus infections! I really wasn’t too rested on the family vacation! I have to laugh about it or I’d cry!!!ReplyCancel

  • Anonymous - Oh this sounds like our vacation a few weeks ago.

We went to Sauble Beach up here in Canada with our family (me, hubby and twin 4 year old boys). The first night there (Monday) hubby and I both got violently ill out of nowhere. I felt awful for most of the week we were there – thankfully hubby felt well enough to care for the boys even though he wasn’t feel well either. We thought we were in the clear by Thursday when neither of the boys had been sick. Thursday night one of them threw up all over the place in the middle of the night. Knowing that it was just a matter of time before our other son got sick, we decided to cut our losses and end this horrible vacation.

We packed up our van and drove home at 1:15am because I was just done. We got home at 4:30am and although it was crazy to drive most of the night I was so glad to be going home.

We are all entitled to one crappy vacation, right? So we have had it now. Hopefully that will be it for us! (Knock on wood)

  • Judy - Oh I have so been there! boo!!! We drove from Pa to Fl last fall and ended up in Urgent Care there four times with 3 sick kids (one of whom was only 9 months old). Two kids with pneumonia. So awful. We were at the beach and we couldn’t even go outside and we didn’t get to go to Disney. Ugh. I still feel sad thinking about it.
But there’s not place like home. I hope you never got sick!!! And i hope the boys are feeling much better by now!!!ReplyCancel

  • Jess - Jess, I’m so sorry things didn’t go as planned. But, I’m really glad you gained that perspective you needed. I think it’s in those times when we think things aren’t going the way WE want them, God speaks the loudest. I’ve been there one too many times. And, those times when the entire family’s sick, it kinda brings you a bit closer. Just means it’s time for some peace and quiet, that’s how I see it. I think maybe I try to find the silver lining when everyone’s throwing up-the worst ever! Seriously, I do think God gives us those times because we just need to be still for a bit. Get well and take care of those boys of yours πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

  • Meg - We just arrived home from a very similar “vacation” ourselves. Both my husband and I got sick, the baby is teething, and it was far too many hours in the car with iffy stomachs… I thought back to your post and tried to maintain some semblance of perspective though. It was tempting to just feel sorry for me, but I was grateful for the help we had while on vacation, for the good moments, for getting to see my aging grandmother hold my son, for having that fussy, teething baby boy with me at all! So thank you for a much needed dose of perspective! And I pray you all are feeling much better now!ReplyCancel

Levi is really into hauling things in his loader tractor lately. He kept wanting to haul his fruit snacks but apparently one pack is just not enough hauling material…he wanted like three or four packs. Hauling fruit snacks gets a little expensive so we had to come up with a new plan. Now Levi has his very own tub of beans so that he can haul beans to his little hearts content. He loves it.
Sometimes he hauls beans inside and sometimes he hauls beans outside. Today we were outside.
I am getting ready for my sister’s baby shower this weekend and came up with the brilliant idea that I could cut fabric outside while Levi hauled his beans and Griffin took a nap. Multi-tasking, right?
My plan worked great…I got a whole ten minutes worth of work done.
Pretty soon there was a pair of little dirty hands digging through my fabric.
“You like my hat, mommy?”
Then he realized that my cutting mat made a pretty good road for his truck.Β
And that my basket of fabric was a good place to dump his loads of beans.

Before I knew it he had overtaken my whole work space. I pretty much got nothing done, but he sure had fun. Talk about productive…not.
I love this age. Two year olds are awesome. But sometimes it seems impossible to get things done. And learning how to teach and discipline in a way that is loving and life giving?! Sheesh. That is hard…and humbling.Β
Our pastor is teaching through Proverbs this summer. His sermon on Sunday was “Wisdom and the Family”. It was such a challenging sermon. I have been rereading and praying through some of the verses this week. I love this verse:
In a reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord there is strong confidence,Β
and his children shall always have a place of refuge.
Proverbs 14:26 (Amplified Bible)
When we are in love with Jesus it permeates our homes.
I won’t even go into the verses about wisdom for wives. Let’s just say I have a lot to work on! πŸ˜‰
If you want to listen to the sermon yourself click here for the video (the mp3 isn’t up yet). I just may need to listen to it again too.

  • Melanie - Oh, I remember the bean bin days! My boys loved them. I went to the dollar store and scored measuring cups, spoons, and some bright stones for them to dig for. I tried to get some things a bit too large to go in the mouth for the smaller boy. My kids played with it forever. And then it ended dumped in my yard and we grew beans for a few summers.ReplyCancel

  • happy_wife - Thanks for the link to the sermon. Discipline and playing is something that I am CONSTANTLY praying for. I mean, who couldn’t use more peace in their life, but especially with a couple kids at home, right? And I remember getting stuff done. I think it was back in 2004.ReplyCancel

  • Anonymous - Man, discipline is HARD! When my oldest was 2 some ladies from my church were reading through Ginger Plowman’s book “don’t make me count to three” It IS SOOOOOO good! She talks about using scripture to teach and train them what to “put off” example: lying and what to “put on” example: truthful lips and helps you get started with knowing good scriptures to use. It is my ONLY parenting book I recommend! πŸ™‚ If you get a chance to read it, and it CAN be done with littles (I read it with a two year old and 8 month old and I am NOT a reader! :)) I think you will be sooo encouraged! -DebiReplyCancel

Housework is like two steps forward, three steps back around here… but hey, they’re only little once, right?! I’ve already survived this challenging time with the first one (he’s 4), so I’m sure I (and our house) will make it this time, too! ha!

Enjoy the weekend, and thanks for the sweet pictures… I will be getting some beans for our house, too! πŸ˜‰

And lastly, thank you for the Christian insight… only ONE of the things I love about you!ReplyCancel

I live in northeastern ohio (1 hr below Cleveland) and my sister goes to a church in Akron called Maranatha Bible Church and she said one of the girls brought a friend and her name was Ivy McClenahan. Anyway, my sister started following you on instagram (as did I, I think you have the cutest boys ever) and I thought it was just random but she said she knew Ivy and found your instagram. Is that your sister/relative? And do you guys live around here?ReplyCancel
