The flies have been really bad this summer.
After Joel’s party we all of a sudden had TONS in our house.
They are very annoying.
Especially if you happen to be trying to take a nap
and you keep waking up because something is buzzing around your head.
Annoying.
They got so bad that we finally had to pull out the fly swatter.
I must have made the mistake of leaving the fly swatter
in arms length of Mr. Levi.
The other day when I turned around from doing dishes
he had taken over the job of swatting the flies.
He was even holding in by the handle.
I let him keep it for a while because he was so proud of himself.
And at least he wasn’t sucking on it, right?
When I turned around again he had scooted over to where our dog, Lucy, was.
Lucy is a farm dog, so she doesn’t usually get to be in the house.
But, when it is really hot (like now) or really cold we let her in the mud room.
Levi gets so excited when she comes in.
He lets her slobber all over his face.
It is kinda gross, but I’m glad they like each other.
Anyway, when I turned around again,
he was using the fly swatter to hit Lucy.
He was hitting her right on the head and she didn’t even seem to care.
He is such a boy.
Already finding weapons at seven months old!
*************
Some of you asked about my paint colors. I use Benjamin Moore paint. I really like it beacuse they have a flat, washable paint. They have good colors too. But it seems to keep getting more expensive so I might have to switch the next time I decide to re-paint. We’ll see. The old color was Huntington Beige and the new color is Carrington Beige.
Hope you have some unexpected little thing that makes you smile today.
Happy Monday!

  • Mory - Totally random thought on flies. I read something online that is suppose to help with flies. (We live in Montana so don’t have a/c and the kids are always out in the back, so doors are left open all the time for ventilation and to keep tabs on the kiddos – anyway). I tried it and it looks crazy but it works. Instead of 27 flies in the house at the end of the day, there are only 2, maybe 3. I had a friend over recently and she said it was the strangest thing, she watched 2 different flies come in, fly around for a few seconds and then fly back out. Give it a try….get 5 or 6 pennies and put in a ziplock bag. Add about an inch or two of water and then tack the bags up around the door posts. I just started with one up above but now I have one up above and one about eye level on either side of the doorway, on the outside. I can’t remember how it works, something along the lines of the flies see the magnified pennies and it scares them….anyway, it works for Montana flies. Another thing I do, when it starts getting darker earlier and want the flies gone…is to turn out the inside lights, turn on an outside light and open the door…flies always go toward the light. Just my 2 cents on flies….hope it works for you.ReplyCancel

Our back yard is nothing spectacular. We do have tons of room…definitely a perk of living in the country. The natural corn “fence” is definitely a perk too. But, I have never wanted to have a party in our backyard. We have always had parties in our front yard. Our backyard is not landscaped at all. We don’t have a patio or deck. There is no door into our house from the back. We have reseeded some of the grass, but not all of it. We have weird things in the middle of our yard…like two propane tanks…and old clothes lines. But in the evening it is very shaded so we decided to party in the back this year.
All that to say, your yard doesn’t have to be perfect to throw a party. With a few simple decorations you can turn your yard into the perfect spot for a backyard bar-b-que.
When I started thinking about Joel’s party I e-mailed Heather to get some ideas. She is so sweet and helpful and has the BEST party ideas (and she is going to have a new baby any day now)! I told her what I was thinking and she suggested a “burlap and bbq” theme. Perfect. Here are the details:
1. Invitations: I made the invitations using photoshop elements and then e-mailed them out. I used free digital scrapbook paper I downloaded here. The rest is just text boxes.
2. Decorations: I pretty much made everything using red gingham, burlap, jute twine, and red & white bakers twine. I purchased the fabric from JoAnns using 40% off coupons. The jute twine is from the dollar bin at Target and the bakers twine was from here.
Pennant Bunting: Heather sent me this idea and I decided to try to make something like it myself. (If you don’t want to make your own, the buntings in that etsy shop are super cute!) I made my bunting using 6 x 9 pennants of gingham and burlap. I zigzag stitched them right onto the jute twine leaving about 2 inches in between each one and enough twine to tie on each end. I am not sure if this is the best way to do this, but it worked for me. I was going to stencil letters on the burlap, but I ran out of time and added the gingham instead. I think it looked just as cute plain though.
Wreath: The wreath was made using an old wreath that I had in my basement. I wrapped strips of burlap around until the wreath form was covered. Then I wrapped bakers twine around the burlap. I printed out a “30” stitched it onto craft paper, punched two holes in it and tied it to the bottom of the wreath. I did this about 2 hours before the party. It took about 10 minutes. Super easy.
Lights: The lights were from Target in their outdoor/summer section. They were on sale last week!
3. Tables: We used two picnic tables that we had and borrowed the rest. I covered the tables with gingham and then cut a runner out of burlap to put down the middle of the tables. I didn’t sew any of it. In the center of each table I put a mason jar of hydrangeas that were cut from my mom’s bushes (thanks mom!).

4. Food:We served hamburgers (good thing we have so much meat!), potato salad, pasta salad, watermelon, and potato chips. My mom, mother-in-law, and grandma made all the salads. Apparently this person really liked potato chips! The silverware was wrapped with a red napkin and tied with bakers twine.

5. Drinks: We had lemonade and water in drink coolers that we borrowed. I wrapped a piece of burlap around each cooler and tied on a sign. We also had IBC root beer (or sugar beer as my niece calls it) and pepsi (both are Joel’s favorites). We put a lemon and a red straw in each mason jar. The mason jars were ones that I had from previous years of canning and a few extra borrowed from my mother-in-law. The straws were from a pack I had picked up at IKEA a few years ago.
6. Ice Cream Bar: We had homemade vanilla ice cream made by my sisters-in-law and Ruth. It is SO yummy. I would give you the recipe, but it is one of those family recipes that isn’t really an “exact” recipe. We use a White Mountain ice cream freezer. The toppings were sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, mini m & m’s, peaches, and chocolate sauce.
Heather also suggested homemade bbq sauce in little mason jars with custom labels for party favors. We didn’t do that, but it would be really cute!
I pretty much made everything and decorated the day of the party. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my sister and brother-in-law though. Thanks guys! Joel helped lots too. I really didn’t want him to have to work for his own party, but I really needed him! :o)
There you go. Now go plan your backyard bar-b-que! Unless you live in Kansas. It is way too hot here to have a backyard bar-b-que right now! Maybe I will start planning a fall party. Fall weather sounds so nice.

The painting is finished.
We decided we didn’t have enough time to paint the living room
last week with Joel’s party and everything else that was going on.
So, yesterday James came over and we started on the living room.
(Yes, my brother-in-law is fantastic. He takes pictures and helps me paint!)
It took us most of the day.
Levi wasn’t too happy about his little tiny corner that we restricted him too.
I don’t know why he didn’t like playing among the chaos!?
We had finished everything but the little room off the living room
when James had to leave.
After Levi went to bed I finished the second coat in that room.
I stayed up way too late and I am definitely feeling it right now.
So, today I am trying to get my house back into some sort of order.
The new color is fabulous.
It is so bright and clean looking…which is what I was going for.
And now the hard part.
Getting everything hung on the walls.
At least that is the hard part for me.
I have new curtains to hang.
I also need to switch out pictures and find a place for all of those picture frames.
I think it is time to put a few of Cora’s pictures away
and put out more pictures of Levi.
We will always keep up Cora’s pictures, but Levi needs some room too.
Ugh. I hate hard changes.
* * * * * * *
I had a few questions about the bbq decorations. I am going to try to answer them in a post later tonight, so if you are wondering about anything we did for Joel’s party leave a comment.

  • Trish - With how crafty you are you could leave Cora’s scrapbook out or a smaller version. It would be nice to keep it handy to show Levi…

It made my heart melt the other day when someone asked my daughter how many sisters she had? She said two… the lady looked confused and said no you mean one. Addie just looked at her and said no two… Alaina is one and my other sister Caylin lives in heaven 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Anonymous - The thought of having to put up some of Cora’s pictures breaks my heart for you. I know I have so many pictures of my little girl that I frequently have to rotate them out. So I guess it is a natural progression. Still hard though. My question about Joel’s party – how did you make the ice cream? Did you buy it somewhere or did you actually use a machine that used those giant metal cylinders? I am a city girl so maybe that’s why I haven’t seen something like that before 🙂ReplyCancel

I wanted to give you a suggestion to preserve those gorgeous walls. I’ve used the “Command” picture hangers and they work great with no holes in the walls. You can find them in the hardware section by the “Command” hooks. Hope this helps you out a little 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Cecilia - I can relate to the hard picture decisions, I was just thinking about that the other day. Our second baby isn’t here yet, but Lord willing, will be born in January. Our NILMDTS pictures of Ethan are all over the house and I was wondering how I would deal with balancing his pictures with his younger siblings. Thank you for mentioning the hard things too, I always wonder how others feel about things like this.

On a brighter note, I love the paint!ReplyCancel

    [Reply]

  • Anonymous - I am not claiming that taking down Cora’s pictures is easy or that thinking of it this way would make it any easier, but you can think that any time you add another child to your family, some of the pictures that were up before will be rotated out to make room to include the whole family!ReplyCancel

I really wanted to do something special for Joel’s 30th.
I thought about trying to surprise him, but I didn’t think I could pull it off.
So, this weekend we celebrated with a backyard bar-b-que.
I was getting really nervous as the week progressed.
We have been having 100+ degree weather here in Kansas.
I was worried that it was going to be too hot…
and there was no way we could fit everyone in our house.
But considering it is August and we live in Kansas, the weather was beautiful.
It cooled down just in time for the party.
And now we have returned to the 100+ degree weather again. Yuck.
Here is a little peek at our backyard party…

The evening was perfect.
It was so fun to celebrate Joel’s birthday with our family and friends.
I think I might have to have a backyard bar-b-que every summer!
(My awesome brother-in-law took all the pictures for me. Thanks James!)

Levi,
You are starting to overflow with personality. I think you are going to be a little spunky like your dad. You are always smiling and pretty content most of the time. Whenever we go out people are constantly stopping us because you are flashing them a big smile or to comment on what a big baby you are. We are loving getting to know you more and more each day.
Here is what you are up to at seven months:
You are eating all kinds of fruits and vegetables. You like pretty much everything we put in your mouth, except peas. You gagged and threw up all the peas the first time you tried them. I guess you were trying to tell me that they were gross. You like to eat and you eat a lot. After every bite you make a “Mmmmm” sound. And if we don’t get the next bite to you fast enough you start to get mad. I don’t think you are starving though because at your last appointment you weighed in at 22 pounds 5 ounces.
You are very sturdy sitting up now. You love to sit up in the living room with your basket of toys and play. You always gravitate towards rings and balls and everything goes in your mouth. If you are not playing with your toys you are in your walker. You LOVE to walk all over the house. You are fast and you have mastered backing up and turning around. I often trip over you because you are always at my feet or following me around. I love that.
You started clapping. You look at your big hands with such amazement as you clap them together. And you get so excited when we say “yeah” as you clap.
You are a great sleeper. You sleep 10-12 hours every night and I can’t even remember the last time you woke up in the middle of the night. You sleep with your pacifier and blanket. You are starting to really like your pacifier all of a sudden. You can put it in your mouth all by yourself. You always put it in  sideways or upside down though. So funny.
Your baby blue eyes have turned totally brown now. I love your eyes. They sparkle and get so big when you are excited. I love that you have brown eyes just like your daddy.
Not only do you talk with your eyes, but you talk with your arms too. Your arms pump up and down–like you are flying–when you are really excited or really mad.
You love to be outside. You like being in your pool, walking and running with Mama in your stroller, or just hanging out around the yard. Unfortunately it has been crazy hot here, so we have been spending most of our time inside.
You like reading books now (phew!). No more hitting the books or closing them as soon as I start reading. We always read before your naps and before bed. I think your favorite book is But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton. I am so glad you like to read with me now!
Happy seven months Levi! I can’t wait to see what you learn next…

  • Andy and Cari - I love but not the hippopotomus… It was my daughters favorite book. I really cannot read it much any more (she passsed away at 8 months old, about 4 months before your sweet Cora) but I wish I could read it to my son… I think he would love it too, becasue it is so cute, I just do not have it in me… some things are just hard, ya know?
OLevi is such a sweet, handsome little, or rather, big guy! Such a blessing!
Peace to you today dear sister…

  • Polka Dot Moon - He is just precious!

I have to say that he almost weighs as much as my 2 1/2 yr old. She’s long and lean! And we LOVE Sandra Boynton books – But Not the Hippopotamus is one of her favorites….actually all the hippopotamus & piggy books!

Enjoy every bit of him at this age. It’s truly one of my favorites.
