On the first day of kindergarten there were always those moms who just couldn’t quite leave their baby behind. They would linger next to their child’s desk helping them get everything ready that they might need for the day. Most of the parents would be gone and I would gently walk over to the one or two hovering moms that were left and gently assure them that their child would be just fine without them. They would reluctantly head for the door with tears in their eyes as they watched their baby venture out “on their own”. Of course, I thought that I understood what an emotional day the first day of kindergarten must be for a parent, but after being in the teacher’s shoes, I promised myself that I would never be one of “those parents”.Β
Let’s just hope that the emotions I felt on the day I dropped Levi off for his first solo ride in the tractor were just a result of crazy pregnancy hormones and not a pattern for the rest of my life as a parent. Otherwise, I may be needing someone to drag me out of the classroom on Levi’s first day of kindergarten. I just might end up being one of “those parents”.

The day Levi and I brought Joel a lunch, he asked if I wanted to try to leave Levi by himself to ride in the tractor. He only had about an hour of work left and he was pretty close to our house if I needed to run back and pick him up.Β So we decided to give it a shot not knowing how Levi would do. He has only ridden in my lap so far.

Β We buckled him in next to his daddy…he wasn’t sure what to think at first.

Β And then he realized that he was getting to stay ALL BY HIMSELF. So exciting.

He blew me a kiss and that is when I had to leave my baby behind. I know it is ridiculous, but I felt like it was his first day of kindergarten. He is not supposed to be big enough to ride in a tractor by himself!

As I was climbing down the ladder I peeked back to see these two smiling at each other. Talk about melting a mama’s heart. I was pretty sure Levi wasn’t going to miss his mama one bit.

I drove home and wondered if he would make it on his own or if Joel would be calling me in a few minutes. About an hour later Joel drove the tractor right up to our front door to drop Levi off. He of course had done great and loved every minute of his ride. And I was so glad to have my baby home.

Levi was one happy little boy. If it wouldn’t have been nap time, I’m pretty sure he could have ridden all day. He sure loves his daddy.

He had Cheetos and chocolate all over his face. Joel said he was falling asleep in the tractor and he had to feed him to keep him awake. So we headed inside, cleaned him up, and off to bed he went.

So, I made it through Levi’s first solo ride in one piece…trying to ignore the fact that my baby boy is turning into such a big boy. A bit over dramatic…I know. Like I said, let’s just pray that I can blame the crazy emotions on the pregnancy hormones!

I was an emotional WRECK!!! I had to go out into the hallway while my husband stayed in the classroom so that he didn’t see me cry! What a wreck! Those pictures are so precious! You MUST frame the one of them smiling at each other:)ReplyCancel

  • Selena - Oh, the memories they will make riding the tractors together… and one day Joel will be teaching him how to drive. I grew up on a farm also and learned to drive everything but the grain truck. So exciting.

And if it makes you feel any better, my Lawson is 3 and has been taking swim lessons. I cried the first day he was in the water… he was fearless and seemed so grown up (and I’m not pregnant!). πŸ™‚

I know, just as I’m sure you do, that many “firsts” will come and as mothers we will continue to teach them and mold them as they begin to experience life.

She’s 2! How am I supposed to just leave her at the church and… Go… Go do what for two hours?! The only time I ever leave her is to go to work. Hmmm…I am afraid I am becoming one of “those” parents. πŸ™‚

  • Bethany - This post is super sweet. I love the pictures of them…as always. There is something really special about Daddy/son relationships.

I thought you might like/hate this quote. My favorite parenting book is “The Mom You’re Meant to Be – Loving Your Kids While Leaning on God” This quote from Walter Wangerin is in the chapter on letting go. “It doesn’t matter how much she has invested in raising him. By stages, now, she labors to let him go. By degrees she loosens the reins, knowing full well the danger to which she sends her child, yet fearing the greater danger of clinging to him forever. And now her hurt is the hurt he will encounter on his own. (Will he survive in a careless existence and thrive?) And beside that, her hurt is loneliness. To be, he must first be gone.
This is childbearing at its most laborious.”ReplyCancel

a little quiet time before my little man wakes up
breakfast…he always wants to eat the second we get downstairs
brushing those teeth (trying to keep him busy) while mama gets ready
reading some books…lately he only wants to read by himself
playing, playing, playing
playing some more…so glad mama FINALLY let him go outside
making my sweet farmer husband a lunch
eating lunch and making a mess
taking daddy his lunch…begging me to let him out of the car to see daddy
riding in the tractor with daddy
nap time = trying to get everything done that I need to before Levi wakes up
nap time over…ready to go again
daddy comes home…dinner at Uncle Loren and Auntie Anne’s
(not typical, but so nice to have someone cook for us)
a late night run through the sprinkler park
(also not typical, but so fun)
…and then my camera battery died.
So, there is a little peek into what a day around The Macs might look like.
Happy Monday!

Okay ladies.
Today is day ten of our 30 Day Challenge.
I have been so blessed to have some of my friends and family (along with many of you fantastic blog readers) join me in this challenge. I love getting a phone call or text asking me how I have been doing and what I have been learning. Talk about accountability. I hope you have someone to keep you accountable too. And if not, here I am…checking in on you. How are you doing? What has God been teaching you?
I can’t say that my mornings haven’t been met with challenges or the temptation to sleep through my alarm. They have. But, the consistency of starting the past ten days at the feet of Jesus has been AMAZING. It has been so good for me to not even think about whether or not I should get up to have my devotions. It is just becoming part of my day now…and I love that. I long to be a woman devoted to the Lord. Everyday, not just on the days when I can squeeze it into my busy schedule.
Now…I have been working on developing this habit of giving the Lord the first part of my day for awhile now. So, don’t beat yourself up or give up completely if you have missed a day or two. I know it is hard work to set aside a daily quiet time alone with God. It is something we have to arrange and plan for. But it is so worth it! I have started reading A Place of Quiet Rest by Nancy Leigh DeMoss since listening to her session on devotions. In her book she says,Β
I must make a conscious, deliberate, daily choice to sit at His feet, to listen to His Word, to receive His love, to let Him change me, and to pour out my heart’s devotion to Him.
That is what I continue to pray for myself and for all of you. That we would daily make a conscious, deliberate, choice to sit at Jesus’ feet. And I want to encourage you especially if the past ten days have been really hard. Keep pushing forward…don’t give up! It is so easy to let the busyness of life crowd out our time with the Lord. It has been a struggle for me my entire Christian life. But don’t let that be an excuse! Start again tomorrow and set that alarm a little earlier or set aside some time during your day. Remember, you need His presence, His wisdom, and His guidance…everyday.

When we give the Lord priority over our days, we are showing that we need Him. Not just when things are falling apart and we are desperate, but we need Him everyday. That is what I am longing to teach Levi…that he needs the Lord. That the one thing that matters most in this life is to have an intimate relationship with Jesus. We pray every night with Levi that he would grow to love Jesus with all of his heart, for all of his days. You might remember Nancy Leigh DeMoss talking about what an incredible legacy it is for moms and dads to acknowledge their need for the Lord and for their kids to see them seeking the Lord each day. That really stuck with me. How can I expect Levi to understand his deep need for the Lord if he doesn’t see his mama living it out in her own life everyday?

Speaking of Levi and pushing forward…

Remember how I told you he has a new ride? He has been loving his new four wheeler. He even was getting the hang of pushing the button to make it go on his own. And then a few days ago he decided he didn’t want to ride anymore. He only wants to push his four wheeler now.
It has been so hot and windy here. I have no idea why he would want to go to all the work to push the four wheeler instead of just sit on it and push a button to make it go. But he is one determined little man.
He has the same route every time. He pushes it down our rock sidewalk and down our long gravel driveway. He would keep going down the dirt road if I would let him. He even waves bye-bye to me as he goes.
Unfortunately he can’t steer very well while he is pushing. He often ends up in the grass or the middle of a field and then realizes he has gotten off his path. It is very frustrating for him and he just stands by his ride and cries until his mama comes to redirect him. Let’s just say I am getting in a lot of exercising these days whether I want to or not.
But once I get him set back up on the driveway, he is off again. He is just sure that he can push that four wheeler and stay on the rocks ALL BY HIMSELF. I am just hoping that one of these days he decides it is more fun to ride it again instead. πŸ™‚
Watching Levi push that little four wheeler was such a picture to me of my own life. There are days when I try so hard to control my life on my own and in my own strength. I push and push and push. And that is when I find myself in the middle of a field, frustrated and tired. But my Heavenly Father is always there to lovingly redirect me back onto the path. I can’t do it on my own. I need to get back on that four wheeler and trust Him to guide me in the right direction. It doesn’t mean life will be easy. But when I allow Him to take control of my life and be the priority of my days, He promises to transform me inside and out.
Show me your ways, O Lord,Β
teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
Psalm 25:4-5

  • EricaG - Hmm…I’m not doing great with the Challenge. But I’m not giving up. Just seems like our toddler is waking up earlier and earlier. WAY before the alarm, so I’m trying to claim night time for devotions. I’m thankful that every day is a new day…a new opportunity to get it right!ReplyCancel

  • Ruth Abel - Thank you for issuing this challenge. I have struggled for a long time to make my quiet time happen in the mornings. I had felt convicted to start disciplining myself about a month ago, then I stumbled across inspiredtoaction.com which is all about maximizing your mornings, and then a few days later, you started this 30 day challenge! I feel so affirmed and excited that there are so many moms like me who want to start learning how to wake up and spend time with the Lord. πŸ™‚ Thanks for your encouragement and this great post! (also, I am a lurker and don’t comment much, but I am praying for you and your new little one that is on the way!)ReplyCancel

  • Andrea - I felt like Levi in the field this week and shed not a few tears over it. I love how God shows us things through children…I often forget that just because I’m an adult and have the ability to do many things on my own, it doesn’t mean God wants me to do things by myself.

Praying you get a little more rest this week. πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

  • Andy and Cari - ok… i have come to a realization. for a small season in my life, if I want QUALITY time in the word. It has to be during nap times. I really wanted to make it my 1st thing… but if the baby wasn’t waking up… or going back to sleep the toddler was up. (and I refuse to wake up at 4:30) after a week of trying. They are both out for at least and hour at the same time later in the day… i am free to do it undisturbed. good time in the word is more important then the time of day I do it…
although I really do see the importance of doing it 1st thing…my mornings can be tough. I will have to readjust once the baby is sleeping the same hours as Rigg.
2 kids at home really makes you step up your game. I was not totally prepared… I am working through it!ReplyCancel

  • heather - Thank you for this post. What better way to teach our children indeed. Unfortunately, I have not been able to motivate myself to get up in the morning any earlier than I already do. This post will echo in my head tonight and, hopefully, in the morning, stopping me from hitting that snooze button!ReplyCancel

WARNING:Β If you are Levi’s dad or grandpa, DO NOT read this post until after Father’s Day.Β
If you do, you will ruin your surprise…and that would be no fun!
I am so excited about my Father’s Day cards this year…actually they are mostly from Levi, but I am still excited. And with Father’s Day being a week and a half away, I am even more excited that my cards are here and ready to go. They even delivered these cute cards to my door. It doesn’t get much better than that!
When Tiny Prints contacted my about reviewing their Father’s Day products, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean really…how creative can you get with Father’s Day…especially Father’s Day cards?! I usually have such a hard time picking out a card that adequately expresses the incredible dad that Joel is to our kids and the incredible dads that we were so blessed to grow up with. Most Father’s Day cards are so cheesy.
As I started clicking around Tiny Prints I was so happy with what I found. I actually ended up making two cards for Joel because I couldn’t pick just one. One is from Levi and one is from me. Of course, the fact that you can personalize these cards is my favorite part. I added some of my favorite pictures and then wrote a personal message inside of each one.
This is the inside of Levi’s card to his daddy. He wrote it all by himself, of course!
I also made Father’s Day cards for Levi’s grandpas. They turned out so cute. I was very impressed with the picture quality of these cards. They really look great!
And I loved that you can add pictures inside of the card too…and it doesn’t even change the price. Don’t you think Levi’s grandpa will love having a card with this sweet face inside?
There are so many cards to choose from. These were the ones I chose…definitely my favorites:
Special Dad FatherMemorable Mosaic Father

Grand Love FatherSweet Spot FatherΒ Isn

Oh, and I forgot to tell you that you can even add a Tango gift card to your order. Tiny Prints will print the gift card and code right inside of your card. Perfect if you are not sure what to get the dad in your life this year! Shhh…don’t tell Joel…but we added one to his card just for fun!
Β Levi loves looking at his picture in these cards. So fun. We can’t wait to give them to his daddy and grandpas on Father’s Day!
Tiny Prints provides stylish, adorable stationery from thank you cards to birth announcements and party invitations to even photo cards. With Tiny Prints by your side, commemorating every holiday and momentous occasion is a cinch!
